Our Rockwatch pebble detectives were out in full force this Easter break, exploring a hidden geological gem in North London – the ancient and mysterious Harrow Weald Common!
Rockwatchers set off to uncover the secrets of the Stanmore Gravel – a fascinating layer of pebbles that survived the Ice Ages. This special area, right next to a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, was the perfect spot to learn all about these ancient stony survivors.
We discovered an amazing variety of pebbles – from rusty-coloured ones and fossil-in-flint finds, to the classic ‘pot and lid’ combos, sparkly white quartz, strange knobbly “white jackets,” and even some that looked just like potatoes! Who knew pebbles could be so weird and wonderful?
There was friendly competition too, as Rockwatchers tried to outdo each other with their most interesting finds. It was fantastic to see everyone getting stuck in, sharing their discoveries, and showing off their pebble knowledge. Huge congrats to our competition winners – you really rocked it!
A massive thank you to our brilliant friends at the Harrow & Hillingdon Geological Society and the London Geodiversity Partnership for making the day so special. We loved every minute – and we’ll definitely be back for more!
Until next time, keep rocking!
