Join Rockwatch for the Staithes Sandstone Formation Field Trip!

Time: Meet at 10 AM, finishing around 4 PM

Meeting Point: Bank Top Car Park, Staithes, North Yorkshire

Join Rockwatch on an exciting fossil-hunting field trip to Staithes, North Yorkshire, one of the most famous Jurassic sites in Northern England! Explore the stunning coastline with Professor Kevin G. Taylor as we uncover marine fossils and delve into the rich geological history of the region.

What to Expect:

  • Introduction to the geology of Staithes at the harbour’s edge.
  • Examination of the Staithes Sandstone, a shallow marine unit with storm-influenced sedimentary structures.
  • Walk along the foreshore to explore Jurassic mudstones and ironstones of the Cleveland Ironstone Formation, with opportunities to find ammonites and belemnites.
  • Discussion on the formation of ironstones and their economic significance.
  • Possible sightings of seabirds and seals!

Essential Information:

  • Maximum 30 participants – book early!
  • Sturdy footwear is essential – terrain is slippery and rocky.
  • Hard hats required.
  • Bring weather-appropriate clothing and a packed lunch.
  • Toilets available at the car park and in Staithes village.
  • Cost: Rockwatch members £2.50 per person.
