What Rockwatchers said about last year's trip

Join us from Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August 2025 for an unforgettable week of rocks, fossils, beaches and fun on the iconic Dorset Jurassic Coast!

This year’s theme – The Present is the Key to the Past – explores the geological idea of uniformitarianism: which proposes that the natural processes shaping the Earth today have also shaped it for millions of years. Or to put it another way, by looking at the present, we unlock secrets of the past!

Led by our much-loved team of experts – Barry Cullimore, Richard Edmonds, Alan Holiday, and Phil Vixseboxse – we’ll explore amazing fossil sites, dramatic coastlines, and ancient environments, all while learning how to decode Earth’s geological story.

Planned Highlights Include:

  • Charmouth and Lyme Regis: Visit the world-renowned Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre and fossil-hunt on the beach – one of the few places where you can literally hit a World Heritage Site with a hammer!
  • Lulworth Cove to Mupe Bay: Walk-through iconic geology and landscapes – fossils, tectonics, climate change and wildlife plus a must-do sea swim and ice cream!
  • Weymouth Bay and beyond: Explore the area’s Jurassic sedimentary rocks called Jurassic Corallian and Kimmeridge Clay and spot the clues they hold to ancient marine life.
  • Evening talks, group games and plenty of time to connect with others who love rocks and fossils as much as you do!

Where We Stay:

We’ll be staying at the fabulous Leeson House Field Studies Centre where we’ll sleep, eat and also enjoy time together with fellow Rockwatchers.

Leeson House Field Studies Centre is set in beautiful grounds just a mile from Swanage in the village of Langton Matravers. It’s comfortable, with good food and expert staff who join us in the field. Accommodation and meals are all included, plus transport each day. We’ll even collect you and return you to Swanage train station if you want to come on the train.
