Celebrating Young Earth Explorers – Highlights from the 2024 Rockstars Competition!

Today, Friday 25th September, marked an exciting moment as we premiered the 2024 Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition Film Showcase at the prestigious Prize Giving Ceremony hosted by the Anglo American Foundation’s Headquarters in London.

This annual event is a celebration of the hard work, creativity, and dedication of young geologists who have explored diverse geological topics. From investigating volcanoes and fossils to creating board games and essays, their passion and talent shone through in every entry.

Michael Mapstone, CEO of Anglo American Foundation, welcomed guests and shared his pride in supporting these young explorers, saying:

“We’re incredibly proud to support Rockwatch in empowering this next generation of curious minds. They aren’t just learning about the Earth; they’re shaping its future, and we can’t wait to see the incredible impact they’ll have on our planet.”

This year’s Prize Giving Ceremony featured highlights from the entries and was an opportunity for our young Rockstars to be inspired by guest speaker Matthew Loader, Regional Geochemist at Anglo American. Matthew offered insights into his career and the fascinating world of geochemistry, while our young geologists also had the chance to ask him questions about what it’s like to be a professional geologist.

Clare Byrne, Rockwatch Chair, summed up this year’s competition with enthusiasm:

“From awe-inspiring discoveries to creative insights, this year’s Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition showcased the incredible passion and talent of our future Earth explorers. Congratulations to all entrants and winners, and a huge thanks to the Anglo American Foundation for their unwavering support.”
