A Fond Farewell to Susanna van Rose

Susanna van Rose - Rockwatch Magazine EditorAs the Christmas holidays approach, Rockwatch members can take a well-deserved break from their schoolbooks and dive into the latest edition of the Rockwatch Magazine! Issue 98 is a truly special one, marking a significant milestone in the magazine’s history. This issue will be the last to feature the incredible Susanna van Rose as one of its dedicated science editors.

Susanna has been a cornerstone of Rockwatch since the very beginning, contributing her time, talent, and passion to the magazine since its launch in 1992. For over 30 years, she has meticulously researched, written, edited, and coordinated nearly 100 issues of Rockwatch Magazine, published three times a year. Her dedication and resourcefulness have been inspiring, and she has left an indelible mark on the Rockwatch community.

Reflecting on her remarkable journey, Susanna shares:

“I’ve written, edited, and advised on many picture books about Earth, several of which are about volcanoes and earthquakes… But uniquely with Rockwatch, you the readers suggest yet more ways of combining cooking, woodworking, knitting, sewing, gardening, and a host of other home skills which help build understanding of geology… I hope the club will help every reader to find as much fun and fulfillment in their life’s work as I’ve found.”

Though Susanna is stepping down as science editor, we are delighted that she will remain a member of the management committee, continuing to guide Rockwatch’s activities. Her legacy will live on, and her influence will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Rockwatchers.

Taking up the mantle will be James Barnett, a former Rockwatcher returning to the club in an exciting new role who will work alongside existing science editor Professor Peter Doyle. Together, they will bring fresh perspectives and continue delivering the high-quality content that members have come to love.

To Susanna: Thank you for your three decades of passion, dedication, and creativity. We wish you all the happiness in your retirement adventures, and we look forward to seeing your continued impact on the club’s success.

Happy holidays, Rockwatchers, and here’s to the exciting year ahead with many more geological discoveries to come!
