Are you ready to step back in time and explore the fascinating Jurassic history of North Yorkshire? On Sunday, 13th July 2025, Rockwatch is heading to Staithes for an exciting fossil-hunting expedition led by Professor Kevin G. Taylor. This is your chance to uncover ammonites, belemnites, and trace fossils while walking through a landscape shaped by ancient marine environments and historic mining industries.
Staithes is a geologist’s dream, home to the famous Staithes Sandstone Formation and Cleveland Ironstone Formation, both rich in history and fossils. From storm-influenced sandstones to iron-rich mudstones, the layers of rock tell a story of ancient seas and shifting environments. This location is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning all fossil collecting must be done responsibly—loose material only!
What makes this trip even more special is the chance to spot seabirds and, if we’re lucky, seals along the coastline. It’s not just a geological journey but also a scenic and wildlife-filled experience in the outdoors amongst nature.
