Would you like to be a Pebble Detective?
Did you know that hidden in the hills of Northwest London, you can find some of the most mysterious and scientifically significant pebbles where scientists are looking for clues about their past?
Thought to be over 2 million years old, the Stanmore Gravel Formation was deposited before the Ice Ages, but the pebbles had taken a long journey through time and space before that. Each tells its own story of the climate and environment that shaped it over time.
Join us on Thursday, 17th April 2025, for Rockwatch Pebble Day at Harrow Weald Common, where you’ll follow a woodland trail to to search for pebbles of different shapes and colours with expert geologists from the Harrow & Hillingdon Geological Society and the London Geodiversity Partnership.
Along the way, you’ll see pebble and fossil displays and imagine the changing landscape across London to Surrey in the distance from the magnificent Harrow View Point. The trail ends at the bank of the Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest where you can find out about the current research project to investigate the origin of the Stanmore Gravel.
