International Geodiversity Day – 6th October 2022

Rockwatch is delighted to announce that it will be joining in with this year’s International Geodiversity Day on Thursday 6th October 2022.

Geodiversity Day, which was announced at the UNESCO at the 41st General Conference in 2021, will be a worldwide celebration to promote all the many aspects of geodiversity and will take the place of this year’s GA Festival of Geology which usually runs in November every year.

The Day forms part of a bigger plan for United Nations Member States to deliver 17 Sustainable Development Goals to help people and the planet by 2030 including tackling poverty, health and well being, education, clean water and sanitation, and affordable and clean energy to name a few.

Many events will be taking place around the world in person and online on the day. As part of the celebrations Rockwatch will be showcasing the perspectives of children and young people and their understanding of geodiversity. We’d love as many Rockwatchers as possible to get involved and embrace this very special #GeodiversityDay!

We invited children and young people from the UK to enter the Rockstars Young Geologists’ Competition, which we hold every summer. Geodiversity is all around us. It’s all the parts of nature that aren’t alive – so that includes fossils, rocks, minerals, soils and landscapes – all the things that Rockwatchers love, and we can’t wait to show you what they’ve produced!

You can find out more about International Geodiversity Day on the event website or on the UNESCO website. It’s your chance to tell the grownups all about it and how understanding our world better benefits everyone.
