Join us for another Rockwatch field trip, this time to Kings Dyke Nature Reserve near Peterborough on Saturday 2 July 2022 from 10.30-4.00pm
We will be looking at fossils from the Oxford Clay at both Kings Dyke Nature Reserve and at Willow Hall Quarry where there are also much younger sand and gravel sediments to also explore.
When the Oxford Clay sediments were deposited some 140 million years ago, Kings Dyke would have been at the bottom of a warm tropical ocean! There would have been ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, crinoids and many other sea creatures swimming in these waters. There were also marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs amongst other large creatures who liked these warm oceans, so there should be lots of exciting fossils to be found!
This field trip is only suitable for children over the age of 7. Remember to bring bags and small cartons to protect your finds so they don’t get damaged.
